While this shoe had a massive general release it was inspired by the unique tale of Michael Jordan rebelling against the NBA uniform rules with a new style of kick. NBA uniform rules stated players’ shoes had to match their teammates and be 51% white. At the time Jordan wore the Air Ships in a classic red and black colorway that violated that rule on October 18, 1984 in an exhibition game vs the Knicks. Legend has it he was fined by the NBA each time he wore the shoe. Supposedly the violations gave Nike more publicity for the shoe so it is said they paid off each fine. The “Banned” pictured here embodies this tale, making them a cherished sneaker. This tale has grown and morphed over the years but still has a sweet spot in the hearts of sneakerheads and hoopheads.
